'Sleep paralysis is a condition in which someone, about to drop off to sleep, or just upon awaking from sleep realizes that s/he is unable to move, or speak, or cry out. This may last a few seconds or several moments. People frequently report feeling a ' presence ' that is often described as malevolent, threatening, or evil. An intense sense of dread and terror is very common. The presence is likely to be vaguely felt or sensed just out of sight but thought to be watching or monitoring, often with intense interest, sometimes standing by, or sitting on the bed. On some occasions, the presence may attack, strangling and exerting crushing pressure on the chest. Many perceptions are associated with SP, such as visual illusions, visceral buzzing, loud sounds, adrenal mental state and presences.'

Inspired by 'O Pesadelo/The Nightmare' painting by Henry Fuseli: [link]

I wanted to make it look like an old painting. I couldn't find any demon or gargoyle stock which could fit so I didn't manage to represent the demon sitting on the chest and had to place a shadow in the background instead.. This theme has been on my mind for a long time because I've been experiencing many periods of SP since I am about 9, I think it's the most terrifying thing someone can live and it's still leaving me confused.

i know how you feel i have SP episodes almost everynight and sometime about 5 times a night and its just horroble and to me it happens with any sleeping possition so in a way i never feel safe when i go to sleep.
just the feeling of not being able to wake up, more or even scream scares the hell out of me.

Amazing work!
I've experienced sleep paralysis several times over the past few years, more particularly when I was exhausted and fell asleep on my back. I have learned to avoid sleeping on my back altogether, but there are the rare occasions that I end up doing it... Well if I find myself paralysed I try to move but there's no use in panicking too much. I know that I will not be able to get up for a while. You are slowly able to move yourself a bit more until your body is working right again. It's not that something is weighing on you, it's more like your body is still asleep and it's heavy as lead so you can't move it. It's just that you really cannot move, the most you can do is twitch your fingers and slightly raise your head. I don't know about inability to speak, because I never tried to speak or cry out while paralysed :) I just kind of wait until I can move again.

Just...don't sleep on your backs when you're freaking tired guys!!

I know this all to well...having an inability to move, fighting to, but nothing! Also having chronic Fibromyalgia makes sleeping difficult.
Great details and lighting,
Love it!

I experience SP last night, it is the single most terrifying experience of my life.
I actually thought I was dying.
It was horrible. :(
